Cayman: Caribe Wave 23 Tsunami Exercise

Background

On 23rd of March 2023, Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) will be participating in the CARIBE WAVE 23 exercise. CARIBE WAVE is the annual tsunami exercise of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The hypothetical scenario

A tsunami generated by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake located near to the border of Honduras.

Purpose and Objective

The purpose of this exercise each year is to advance tsunami preparedness efforts in the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions.  As such, various schools will be reviewing their tsunami response plans and procedures, and HMCI will be conducting a National Emergency Notification System Test for App users on March 23, 2023 at 9:25 am.

So far, 10 schools have signed up to participate in the tsunami exercise and it is not too late for more schools to get involved! To register follow this link here: TsunamiZone and select the Gulf of Honduras scenario.

Download the Emergency App

During the tsunami exercise, the Cayman Islands NENS App will produce a loud sound for 2- 5 seconds at 9:25 am (This is only a test). 

To participate in the NENS Athoc App test, see instructions for downloading and signing up for app, if you haven’t already done so.

Download the app from the store – Blackberry Athoc IOS and Android 

• Open the Blackberry AtHoc app on your device

• On the registration screen, enter your email address and hit send. This must be the same email address used to opt-in

• Check your email for a link from the Blackberry AtHoc system administrator to activate your account

• Click verify now 

• Once your email address has been verified, open the Blackberry AtHoc app and enter the organization code

• The organization code is HMCI

• Press Send. The screen will indicate that you are now set up to receive notifications

National Emergency Notification System Test for the Caribe Wave 23 Exercise

This is an Exercise 

Following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake which occurred off Honduras. Exercise Exercise Exercise. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a tsunami alert for the Cayman Islands. This is an exercise only. 

The Pacific Warning Centre (PTWC) has advised that 1 to 3 foot tsunami waves are possible with the estimated arrival time of the first tsunami wave in Grand Cayman at 10:08 am and in the Sister Islands at 10:13 am.

This is an exercise only. 

Use this exercise scenario to consider your preparedness response procedures, and where you would go to get to higher ground.

The exercise will be coordinated together with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Caribbean regional emergency management stakeholders (CEPREDENAC [Coordination Centre for the Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central America], CDEMA [Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency], and EMIZA [French Inter-Ministerial for the Antilles Estate Major Zone]), as well as the Central America Tsunami Advisory Center (CATAC) of Nicaragua with the purpose of assisting tsunami preparedness efforts in the Caribbean.
