Cayman: Chevala Burke Appointed as Deputy Supervisor of Elections

The Governor’s Office is pleased to announce the appointment of Chevala Burke as the new Deputy Supervisor of Elections. Mrs. Burke brings a wealth of experience and a strong dedication to this important role, reflecting our commitment to ensuring the integrity and efficiency of our electoral processes.

Mrs. Burke has been an essential part of the Elections Office, working in several key positions. Notably, she was the Presiding Officer for the Cayman Brac East electoral district from 2009 to 2017, before taking on the role of Returning Officer in 2021. In this capacity, she oversaw candidate nominations, organized and staffed polling stations, supervised vote counting, and officially declared the election results.

As Deputy Supervisor of Elections, Mrs. Burke will assist the Supervisor in managing the overall election process, ensuring that all procedures are fair, transparent, and in line with legal requirements. Her lengthy experience and commitment to democratic principles make her an excellent fit for this role. She will work alongside current Deputy Supervisors, Sheena Glasgow and Ernie Scott, to support the Supervisor of Elections in overseeing the electoral process.

Wesley Howell, Supervisor of Elections, expressed his confidence in Mrs. Burke’s appointment, saying, “Mrs. Burke’s dedication and proven experience in election management are invaluable to our team. Her leadership will greatly strengthen our efforts to ensure free and fair elections.”

Her Excellency, the Governor Jane Owen, also shared her congratulations: “I am delighted to see Mrs. Chevala Burke step into this key role as Deputy Supervisor of Elections. Free, fair, and transparent elections are the foundation of any democracy, and her leadership will help ensure the continued success of the electoral process in the Cayman Islands. I have full confidence in her abilities and wish her every success in this important role.”

Mrs. Burke’s appointment comes at a critical time as we continue to enhance our electoral systems and prepare for the upcoming elections and referendum. Her expertise and leadership will be vital in maintaining the strength and trustworthiness of our democratic processes. She will also continue to serve as the Returning Officer for Cayman Brac East for the 2025 General Election and Referendum.
