Cayman: CIFS confirm no signs of smoke at Landfill
The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) have reconfirmed the fire at the vehicle recycling plant which started on Friday, 24 January 2020 is fully extinguished. Full control of the site handed back to Island Recycling yesterday morning (Tuesday, 28 January 2020) with appropriate monitoring control measures in place to ensure a very quick response should any signs of fire be noted.
CIFS also continue to monitor the vehicle recycling plant operated by Island Recycling as a precaution and as of today (Wednesday, 29 January 2020) CCTV footage from the site shows no sign of any smoke which conversations with the site operator have confirmed.
A two-day joint Waste Management training course between CIFS and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is planned starting from Thursday, 30 January 2020. As part of this training a controlled burn will be taking place on site on Friday, 31 January 2020.
Residents and Businesses are advised that this well managed small burn with controlled and segregated material may cause a small amount of smoke to be visible from the site. This will be closely managed by CIFS and DEH colleagues who will be on site undertaking this essential training.
The course is being delivered by waste management sector expert Dr Tony Sperling and was arranged last year with a view to improve both waste management operational practices and fire fighting tactics in the event of an incident at the Landfill or vehicle recycling plant.
