The Utility Regulation and Competition Office (OfReg) is aware that, there are a number of claims circulating in relation to ‘5G’ Technology being linked to the Coronavirus.

5G refers to the fifth generation of wireless communication technologies supporting cellular data networks.

Please note that there are currently no 5G networks licensed by OfReg for operations in the Cayman Islands.

However, prior to licensing any use of electromagnetic spectrum, due diligence as well as proper technical and regulatory analysis by this office will be conducted.

Applicants will have to demonstrate that the proposed technology poses no harm to any person.

On their website, the World Health Organization stated that ‘viruses cannot travel on radio waves/mobile networks, Covid-19 is spread in many countries that do not have 5G mobile mobile networks.

COVID-19 is spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks.

People can also be infected by touching a contaminated surface and then their eyes, mouth or nose’.

Although there have been some reports in overseas jurisdictions of damage to 5G cell towers, OfReg would like to advise the public under section 83 of the Information and Communications Technology Law (2019 Revision), causing damage to ICT infrastructure is an offence and upon conviction, a person may be liable to a fine of twenty thousand dollars or to imprisonment for two years.
