Cayman: DEH Food Hygiene Training resumes

Training courses for personnel in the food industry offered by the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has been resumed from 18 May, 2022. The Basic Food Handlers’ training is geared at equipping food-handling personnel throughout these islands with pertinent knowledge of handling, preparing, and delivering food safely, thereby preventing consumers from contracting food-borne illness and disease.

The training offered covers topics such as bacteriology, cleaning/sanitization, personal hygiene, temperature control, cross-contamination, food storage practices, food preparation, pest identification and control, food premise construction and design. It applies to new personnel working in the food industry and anyone wishing to continue as food handlers after the expiration of certificates issued by the DEH, which are valid for three years.

The DEH requires all personnel involved in the preparation of food for public consumption to be trained. Therefore, food business owners are encouraged to act now and register their employees to attend one of these important workshops. Persons who are currently unemployed and who are desirous to be trained and certified in food hygiene and safety should also call to make arrangements to attend.

Please contact the DEH at 949-6696 or via email at [email protected], to register. A registration cost of $15 per person covers all materials and fees that should be paid at DEH headquarters, located at 580 North Sound Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Training sessions are usually held on Wednesdays between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Grand Cayman. However, training days may differ somewhat for the Sister Islands. Interested persons on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are asked to call 948-2321 to make arrangements. Participants registered and already paid for the course will be given priority.
