Cayman: DEH Operations in preparation for severe weather
Grand Cayman, 23 September 2022 – Due to the severe weather forecast, the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is advising members of the public of changes in the operation of the landfills and the delivery of garbage collection services.
The landfills’ operating hours on Saturday are 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in George Town and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Sister Islands. All landfills will remain closed on Sunday and Monday. Additionally and with immediate effect, derelict vehicles, scrap metals or used oil will not be accepted until further notice.
There will not be garbage collection on Monday. The suspension of this service will affect the ordinary schedule causing a delay by at least one day. More information on the resumption of this service will be provided in due course.
Due to our commitments in preparation for the incoming severe weather, recyclable materials will not be able to be processed until further notice. However, recyclable materials currently deposit at the depots will be collected to ensure they do not become litter or a hazard.
Given the expected disruption of services, members of the public are asked to be patient whilst the DEH team continues to work hard and remain committed to resume its regular services.
As part of the Hurricane Preparedness Plan for the current hurricane season, temporary debris sites have been identified by the Initial Clearance and Debris Management (ICDM) Committee chaired by the DEH. The location of these temporary sites will be announced as it becomes necessary. Residents are asked to wait to dispose of any materials until a day or two after the all clear. This will help reduce congestion and waiting times at the landfills and the temporary sites.
