The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) wishes to inform the public that as of today, Monday, 29 March, 2021 the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) has handed the site back to DEH. CIFS will still attend the site periodically to inspect and carry out temperature surveys and other safety measures.

In order to better mitigate the risk of fires DEH will need to carry out further works and control measures. During this time DEH will be stopping derelict vehicles from entry to the landfill. This hold will be for a two (2) week period until Monday 12^th April.

Once all safety measures are in place, derelict vehicles will once again be accepted however, DEH will be changing the days of accepting these vehicles to Mon to Fri only, from 7am to 5pm.

“As long as it is not a hazard to traffic or persons we are asking the public to be patient while we complete these exercises and it is safe to receive derelict vehicles at the George Town Landfill. We want to also thank the public for their continued safety practices when disposing of goods which can help us prevent fires,” said Michael Haworth – Assistant Director – Solid Waste.
