Cayman: UPDATE: Police Release Scene of Explosion Incident

Update (10 June):

Police and partner agencies have completed processing the scene of the house explosion incident which occurred on Monday, 5 June, at a residence on Bayfield Crescent, shortly after 1:00PM.

The police cordon has now been released. However, the public is advised that the Planning Department has deemed the structure where the incident occurred as UNSAFE to enter or occupy.  As such, persons are to avoid entering the property.


Update (8 June):

Police, Fire, emergency services and other partner agencies, remain on the scene of the house explosion incident which occurred Monday 5 June, at a residence on Bayfield Crescent, shortly after 1:00PM.

Initial investigations indicate that the incident does not appear to be due to suspicious circumstances. 

The established police cordon currently remains in place, however, the NRA has been working to clear the road of debris today.  It is expected that the road will be re-opened by the end of the day.  Once the road is cleared the police cordon will be reduced to the immediate vicinity of the property where the incident occurred.

As this work takes place and the investigation continues, the public is being reminded to avoid the area and to remain outside of the police cordon.

One man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.


Update (6 June):

Police, Fire, emergency services and other partner agencies, remain on the scene of the house explosion incident which occurred yesterday, 5 June, at a residence on Bayfield Crescent, shortly after 1:00PM.

Efforts to determine the cause of the incident are ongoing, with fire and police remaining on scene to conduct investigations. At this time the cause of the incident remains unknown.

A police cordon remains in place and the public is being reminded to avoid the area and to remain outside of the established cordon. The public is also being reminded, for their safety, to avoid this area until the authorities have deemed it safe.

Three of the four persons injured in the incident have since been discharged from hospital, while one man remains in hospital with serious injuries.


Update: 

Police and other emergency services are still at the location carrying out onsite investigations into the report of an explosion that took place at a residence on Bayfield Crescent, Newlands.

Police have implemented cordons at the location for the protection of the public and to maintain the integrity of the scene. The Cayman Islands Fire Service is currently working to make the scene safe and identify the source of the explosion. While this is being done, the public is being asked to avoid this area and to remain outside of the established cordons placed by the police. Additionally, there may be places where debris is present, that have not been cordoned off. The public is also being asked, for their safety, to avoid this area until the authorities have deemed the area safe.

Breaching police cordons is an offense according to section 49(3) of the Police Act (2021 Revision) and anyone who contravenes a police cordon commits an offense and is liable to a fine of $3000 or to imprisonment for one year or to both.

Initial Release (5 June): 

Police, Fire and other emergency services are currently on the scene of a serious incident at an address on Bayfield Crescent, off Hirst Road in Bodden Town, where an explosion at a residence was reported. The residence received major damage, while some nearby structures were also damaged. At this time, four persons have been reported to have received injuries as result of the incident and are currently being treated by emergency medical services.

The area has been cordoned off by police and members of the public are advised to avoid the area.
