Cayman: Fire at GT Landfill – UPDATED

Landfill Fire Extinguished
Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) and Department of Environmental Health (DEH) crews working overnight on the fire at the George Town Landfill, report that a small flare-up occurred at approximately 1.30 a.m. this morning (Thursday 6 May 2021).
The flare-up was quickly extinguished using safe systems of work and the area of concern was continually damped with no other issues arising.
The damping operation was shut down at 7:30 this morning, with equipment remaining in place, and DEH monitoring the area.
A CIFS relief crew is expected to return to the landfill at 9a.m. this morning. The incoming officer-in-charge will further assess the situation, and recommend any required operational tactics as necessary, to ensure it does not reignite.
EARLIER STORY
The Cayman Islands Fire Service and Department of Environmental Health (DEH) confirm that a fire, reported at the George Town Landfill at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 5 May 2021, is now contained and under control.
Crews from the Central Fire Station and the West Bay sub-station are on site and will be working through the night, alongside DEH crews, using safe systems of work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
The blaze is located at the top southwest corner of the tip area, where waste is disposed.
Residents in the area are reminded to stay inside with the doors and windows closed.
