Cayman: Gimistory festival to cap off Pirates Week District Day

Pirates Week Festival to host the International Storytelling Festival Gimistory during Grand Cayman District Days

The Pirates Week steering committee, in partnership with the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF), warmly invites the public to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Caymanian storytelling during the Gimistory Festival, a highlight of Grand Cayman’s district day celebrations.

This intimate and captivating experience, which unfolds beneath star strung skies, will transport attendees aback in time through song, dance, poetry, and storytelling.

“Gimistory is a cherished tradition deeply rooted in Caymanian folklore, perfectly aligned with this year’s theme of ‘Setting Sail Through Time,’” stated Festival Director Patrice Beersingh. “We are particularly excited to incorporate it into the district day celebrations, offering attendees a chance to hear stories unique to each district.”

From nostalgic tales of childhood to unexpected moments of belonging, these narratives come alive with the expertise of local storytelling veterans, including Wendee Miller, Lesley-Ann Bernard, Josefa and Evana Martinez, Martin Keeley, Nasaria Suckoo Chollette, and many more.

Since its inception in 1998, the Gimistory festival has aimed to revitalize Cayman’s treasured storytelling tradition. Over the past 25 years, it has showcased an array of local and international storytellers and collaborated with culturally significant initiatives like Red Sky at Night.

Gimistory is not just for adults; during the festival week, the Foundation will bring storytellers directly to local schools, inspiring children to share their stories on stage through the CNCF Culture Keepers’ ‘Give a Story’ campaign.

Cassandra Shea, Head of Theatre and Festivals of the Foundation, said, “We are thrilled to continue celebrating over 20 years of legacy of storytelling with this year’s Gimistory Festival. Whether audiences are hearing these tales for the first time or reminiscing about the stories their grandparents used to share, this timeless art form resonates with audiences of all ages. Experiencing it live, in a community setting, adds an extra layer of magic that we hope everyone can take home. We can’t wait to welcome everyone at the Pirates Week District Days and start the night off by sharing this special tradition!”

This year, the Foundation is proudly sponsoring the Fry Fish Competition during Pirates Week District Days, a celebration of Caymanian cultural heritage and the perfect way to share the bounty of the land and sea. Afterward, prepare for chills as Duppy Night at Smith’s Barcadere on November 22nd closes out Gimistory in its traditional ghostly fashion.
