Cayman Golf Association to host Junior Championships
The Championships are played annually and are rotated amongst the member islands of the Caribbean Golf Association. It features the best 100 juniors from the Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and the US Virgin Islands, along with their coaches and supporters.
The golf course at the North Sound Club was designed by Roy Case of New Jersey National and Carenage Bay Canouan Grenadines fame. He’s known for creating great golf on environmentally sensitive land and working with the natural topography. North Sound is a semi-private golf club that allows both member and non-member players to enjoy the course.
North Sound Club has seen an increase in interest in the number of junior players.
The junior golf programme provides Cayman’s youth with clinics throughout the year as well as an intensive summer camp where they receive professional golf lessons to help them improve the mechanics of their game and gain confidence in competitive tournaments.
A number of juniors will be selected to compete for the Cayman Islands in the Championships based on playing ability, scores and eagerness to improve.
The event requires many hours of work, resources, sponsorship and volunteers to make it a successful tournament for all participants. The tournament provides a platform for young junior players involved in the game of golf to experience a competitive playing field, build relationships with other juniors from the Caribbean and develop a sense of accomplishment with their hard work in preparing for the event.
Many players from the Caribbean Junior Championships are recruited by top universities in the United States and Canada on golf scholarships and qualify for the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships.
