Cayman Government Staff, Volunteers Partner in Preparedness
By: Aliya Dunstan
A multi-agency team of volunteers and government employees worked together to deliver effective preparedness and recovery services following recent inclement weather. Members of the Cayman Islands Regiment, in partnership with the Public Works Department, Cayman Islands Fire Service, and volunteers from the Cayman Islands Red Cross have been working tirelessly over the past two weeks to assist residents in preparing for the severe weather affecting the island.
Efforts coordinated by Hazard Management Cayman Islands were all aimed at mitigating the impact of the projected heavy rainfall and flooding from Hurricane Helene and the most recent weather system.
Key actions included road crews clearing debris to ensure safe travel, particularly in flood-prone or low-lying areas. Teams were also deployed to install emergency pumps to manage water levels in critical drainage systems, helping to prevent further flooding and property damage in vulnerable communities. Additionally, sandbag collection points were set up at various 4 locations on Grand Cayman and 2 on Cayman Brac, where volunteers and officers assisted residents in collecting and placing sandbags around homes and businesses.
