Cayman: Governor Holds National Security Council Meeting

Her Excellency the Governor Mrs. Jane Owen presided over a special meeting of the National Security Council on Tuesday, 27th February 2024. The meeting was convened at the request of the Premier and was attended by all Council members to discuss national security measures taken after the incident at the Ed Bush Stadium on Sunday 25th February.

During the session, the Commissioner of Police, Kurt Walton provided updates on the Royal Cayman Islands Police Services investigation into the recent incident and outlined plans for a firearms amnesty. Additionally, the Council agreed upon a comprehensive revision of the national security structure to enhance coordination among key departments. The Council also urged the exploration of changes to increase penalties for firearms offenses and gang-related activities.  

In addressing maritime security, Coastguard Commander Robert Scotland was tasked with developing an urgent plan to combat trafficking and illegal maritime activities.

The Council requested an audit of the National CCTV program to assess its effectiveness in enhancing surveillance capabilities. Expressing appreciation, the Council thanked the Government and the Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the Crime Stoppers award.

The meeting underscored a collaborative effort to address security challenges and implement effective strategies for the well-being and safety of the Cayman Islands and its people.
