Her Excellency the Governor, Mrs. Jane Owen took her oaths of office and allegiance as the 15th Governor of the Cayman Islands during a widely anticipated swearing-in ceremony held in the House of Parliament today (Friday, April 21).

In her remarks, Speaker of the House, Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks said, “Over the span of 52 years, we have had 14 Governors so far and each have brought their unique perspective to the role. Some helped the Cayman Islands to carve a place on the world stage, some created a bit of controversy and some emerged themselves in our culture. Regardless of how they carried out their roles and responsibilities, they all left here appreciating the Caymanian people and culture. I certainly wish the name for you, Mrs. Owen”.

Premier Hon. Wayne Panton in his address on behalf of the people of the Cayman Islands said that the swearing-in of the Governor marks the start of what will be a delightful journey together. Premier Panton stated, “I know that you plan on getting out and about the districts to meet our people. Expect to see within our communities individual characteristics bound by a shared history”.

He further noted, “We look forward to working with you to ensure a strong, prosperous and bright future for the people of the Cayman Islands. It is my hope that the UK Government continues to foster this mutually beneficial relationship with us, ever-growing in its strength.”

In welcoming the new Governor on behalf of the civil service, Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson emphasised that the civil service works tirelessly towards to achieve the vision of being a world-class entity. “You will soon see this for yourself first-hand. I believe you will be impressed by the talent and work ethic of our civil servants. Delivering results for the elected Government is our mandate. With that comes high expectations for performance and a responsibility of leadership to help our people thrive”, he said.

Governor Owen in her reply said she is determined to ensure that the UK Cayman relationship continues to grow and bring benefits for both sides. “It is good to have firm friendships and mutual support. In working on this agenda with all of you, I will always respect the boundaries of the constitution, while being open to sharing expertise and experience from the United Kingdom where this can add value here in Cayman,” Governor Owen stated.

For the first time in the history of the Cayman Islands, the three branches of government – notably the Executive, the Judiciary and the Parliament are all headed simultaneously by women.
