Cayman Islands: A 57 year old George Town man is sentenced in child sexually transmitted infection case
A 57-year-old George Town man is sentenced to 4 years and nine months in prison for giving a 7-year-old girl a sexually transmitted infection (STI), Radio Cayman’s Andrel Harris reports.
In December, a grand court judge convicted Devon Alanzo Stewart of indecent assault of a minor. Stewart was accused of giving a 7-year-old trichomonas in September 2016. The child was his neighbor’s daughter. After molesting the child Stewart said he would kill her mother if she told anyone else. A urine test would later confirm that Stewart was positive with the same STI.
When handing down his decision via video link the judge said Stewart was a close family friend and therefore was in a position of trust which he knowingly abused. He also noted Stewart had committed the crime while on bail for charges of a similar nature. Even though he was acquitted of *that* crime, he still would have been violating conditions of his bail. Nonetheless, the judge said he was unable to treat this as an aggravating factor because of the acquittal.
The judge sentenced Stewart to 5 years in prison – reduced by 3 months because of his previously clean record.
Stewart remains adamant that he was wrongly convicted, and says he is the victim of a corrupt justice system.
The prosecution and defence council are expected to come together to finalise the details of a sexual harm prevention order. If passed, it would be the second such order passed in the history of Cayman’s judicial system.
