Cayman Islands DEH offers laboratory tours for high school students
The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) invites Grade 11 students enrolled at all Cayman Islands high schools to tour its environmental health laboratory on Friday, 9 March 2018.
The laboratory is located at the Cayman Islands Environmental Centre, 580 North Sound Road, Grand Cayman. Tours will commence at 9.30 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.
“These tours will provide students with an introduction to applied science and the ways it can be used in environmental health research,” said Laboratory Manager Antoinette Johnson. “Hopefully, we can encourage them to consider careers in science as one of their options for the future.”
Activities will include short career talks and demonstrations. Students will also be given the opportunity to participate in some laboratory activities. Each tour will last for 15 minutes and can accommodate groups of 10 students.
“I encourage each of our schools to take advantage of this opportunity to see ‘science in action’, especially at this time when society has embraced STEM-based careers as a means of achieving sustained growth through innovation,” said Hon. Dwayne Seymour, Minister for Health, Environment, Culture and Housing.
DEH urges interested schools to schedule a time-slot by Friday, March 2, 2018 for students to be a part of this free activity.
Laboratory tours are a part of the DEH’s ongoing educational services. Other educational activities include landfill tours and school presentations.
For more information or to schedule a time-slot, please contact DEH’s Public Relations and Education section on 743-5992.
