Cayman Islands: Dr Watler-Lyons graduates from MEMOS

Dalton 1.pngDr Dalton Watler-Lyons successfully completed MEMOS (Executive Masters in Sport Organisations Management), class of 2015. The mission of MEMOS is to assist professionals working in national or international sports bodies to develop the knowledge required in order to better manage their organisations. The programme is available in English, French and Spanish, and each year participants from all 5 continents are carefully selected to study together. Dr Watler completed MEMOS in Spanish, which was scheduled over twelve months and consisted of three nine-day residential modules, and a three-day final module devoted to the defence and presentation of his dissertation.

MEMOS is organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) alongside multiple scholastic institutions. Dr Walter was provided with a scholarship from the IOC to cover the majority of costs associated with the year-long programme, through the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC).

The 4 modules were held in Barcelona, Spain; Bogota, Colombia; Madrid, Spain; and finally Lausanne, Switzerland where the IOC Headquarters are located. In addition to the curriculum, the participants undertook a research project concerning the management of a sport organisation, in which they are active. His final project was defended in front of an examining board made up of professors from the participating institutions and publicly presented during the last module in Lausanne. His degree is from the University of Lleida, Spain.

Dr Watler is the current President of the Cayman Islands Athletics Assocation. For his project, he chose to develop an educational module and programme for the identification and selection of athletes in the Cayman Islands. “The Olympic Ideals and the quality of the programme made a great impression on me,” he said, “it does not matter where you come from for when you love and appreciate sports, we all share the same views and ideals and it was a great learning environment.”

Following the completion of his course, he pushed forward with the publication of his book “Sports In Socio-Political Territory, Game Performances and Tourism,” in which a chapter, titles Sport Talent and Athletes Development, is derived from his research within MEMOS dissertation. Dr Watler held a successful book launch on May 14th at Books and Books in Camana Bay.
