The Cayman Islands Under 15 Boys National Football Team tasted defeat for the first time at the CFU Under 15 Championships as they lost to the Dominican Republic 0-1 in the first semi final played on Friday afternoon in St. Maarten.
A goal in the first 10 minutes from a penalty was all that the Dominican Republic needed to advance to the final to be played on Sunday, August 16. According to reports from the game, the local boys fought hard until the final whistle.
The Dominican Republic will face Curacao, who overcame St. Lucia 2-1 in the second semi final.
The Cayman Islands will face St. Lucia for third place also on Sunday afternoon. Both countries were paired together in Group 1 with the Cayman Islands winning their first encounter 2-0.
On hearing the result, a somewhat disappointed but very proud CIFA Vice President and Interim President Bruce Blake added, “I am very, very proud of the young men who represented their country superbly throughout the tournament. The semi final result went against us but we should be excited about playing for third place. This is truly an excellent achievement and I want to express my sincere gratitude to the coaching staff, the players and the parents. We will learn from this experience and move forward. The future looks very bright. “
The team will return home on Tuesday, August 18.
