This past Saturday saw the always entertaining 2015/2016 CUC Primary Football League (PFL) and Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL) semi finals, which were played at the historic Annex Field in front of a packed house. Players and coaches left everything on the field as they battled for a place in the coveted finals, which are scheduled for this Saturday, January 30.

PFL Under 9 Consolation Cup:
In the only PFL Under 9 Consolation Cup semi final, George Town Primary defeated South Sound
Schools 3-0 to secure their place in the final and a much anticipated rematch against Triple C. George Town Primary will face Triple C at 9:00 a.m. for the Under 9 Consolation Cup.
PFL Under 9 Champions Cup:
In the PFL Under 9 Champions Cup, defending champions Cayman Prep’s amazing season continued with a 1-0 semi final upset of top seed Cayman International School thanks to a penalty from Jakub Neverill.

Only a week ago, Cayman Prep were extremely close to being eliminated from playing in the semi finals and only made the top four in the playoff standings by a single goal.

In the second semi final, St. Ignatius Prep defeated second seed Savannah Primary 2-1 with goals from Devonte McInernay and an unfortunate Savannah Primary own goal. Joshua Elliott scored the lone goal for Savannah Primary.

Cayman Prep will face St. Ignatius Prep for the Under 9 League Championship at 10:00 a.m. and
Cayman International School will play Savannah Primary for third place at 9:00 a.m.

PFL Under 11 Consolation Cup:
In the PFL Under 11 Consolation Cup, Triple C outlasted St. Ignatius Prep in an ‘extended’ penalty
shootout after the schools could not break a deadlock in regulation time and extra time.

St. Ignatius’ Devonte McInernay struck first to put his school in front before Nicholas Campbell equalised for Triple C. The game went into extra time locked at 1-1 before Liam Chisholm notched goal number two for St. Ignatius Prep. Not to be outdone, Triple Cs Canaan Bodden equalised to tie the game at 2-2.

After each school missed one of the three regular penalties, it took a further seven rounds of sudden death penalties to find a winner. Both goalkeepers were excellent between the posts but on the seventh penalty, St. Ignatius Prep missed and Triple C scored, pushing the Crusaders into the final by a score of 6-5.

In the second semi final, NorthEast Schools came from behind to beat George Town Primary 2-1 with Jonathan Ebanks hitting the next twice to cancel out Nathaniel Garrett’s opener for George Town Primary.

Triple C will face NorthEast Schools in the final of the Under 11 Consolation Cup at 2:30 p.m.

PFL Under 11 Champions Cup:
In the always entertaining PFL Under 11 Champions Cup, defending champions Red Bay Primary will play Cayman Prep for the title for the second year running.

As expected, both semi finals were very well contested and both went down to the wire as Red Bay Primary and Cayman Prep needed sudden death penalties to condemn Savannah Primary and Truth For Youth to the third place game.

Red Bay’s boys found themselves behind very early after Nicholas Chowtee found the back of the net for Truth For Youth to open up a 1-0 lead. Red Bay’s top marksman Alejandro Holness levelled the score from the penalty spot in the second half and the score would remain at 1-1 for the remainder
of the game and through extra time.

During the penalty shootout, each school missed one of the three regular penalties to send the game into sudden death penalties. On the first sudden death penalty, Truth For Youth failed to convert while Red Bay Primary scored to secure their spot in the final with a 4-3 victory.

In the second semi final, Cayman Prep also needed sudden death penalties to beat Savannah Primary
4-3 to earn their spot in the final.

Savannah Primary’s Joshua Gardner opened the scoring with a wonderful strike. Savannah Primary held on to their slim lead and weathered the storm for most of the second half with goal keeper Charles Gilman playing the game of his life before Frederick Robson equalised late in the game for Cayman Prep.

A winner could not be decided in extra time and so it was on to penalties. Much like the first semi final, both schools missed a penalty during the three regular penalties. In the sudden death penalties, Savannah Primary missed their first and Cayman Prep scored to secure their spot in the final with a 4-3 win.

Red Bay Primary will play Cayman Prep at 4:00 p.m. for the Under 11 League Championship with
Savannah Primary facing Truth For Youth for third place at 2:30 p.m.

GPFL Consolation Cup:
In the GPFL Consolation Cup final, George Town Primary will play Sir John A. Cumber Primary B at
11:30 a.m. Both schools secured their places in the final following Playoff Day 4, two weeks ago.

GPFL Champions Cup:
In the GPFL Champions Cup, defending league champions Sir John A. Cumber Primary squeaked past Triple C 1-0 thanks to a very late Stoyanna Stewart strike and Cayman International School beat Cayman Prep 6-0 with goals from Kayla Bradley (3), Felicity Hughes, Alexia Bromfield and Kasey Golding.

Sir John A. Cumber Primary will face Cayman International School for the GPFL League Championship at 12:45 p.m. while Triple C will play Cayman Prep for third place at 11:30 a.m.
