Cayman Islands’ Harneys sponsors young Caymanian to pursue law degree
Cayman law firm Harneys has awarded a young Caymanian a scholarship to study law in the UK.
High achiever Sydonie Barrett, 19, former student at St Ignatius School, graduated with honours in 2012, before beginning her degree in law at the University of Surrey in the UK this September. During the summer she interned at Harneys where she undertook tasks such as populating the corporate services database with directors, officers and shareholders and reviewing resolutions and board minutes and reconciling them with the entries on the registers, as well as attending training sessions.
Marco Martins, Managing Partner, Harneys, said Sydonie’s many outstanding achievements and her motivation to succeed caught the attention of the firm.
“Sydonie impressed us greatly with her qualities and successes, such as being involved in the Cayman Islands CPA 4th and 5th Youth Parliament, undertaking roles as ‘Deputy Premier’ and ‘Leader of the Opposition’, as well as winning the academics category in the Cayman Islands ‘Proud of Them’ initiative last year,” he said. “We have followed Sydonie’s progress over the years, having sponsored her trip to China for the Global Young Leaders Conference. We are delighted that she has chosen law as her field of study and are -happy to assist her in this way.”
Sydonie said she was honoured to be the first recipient of a full university scholarship from Harneys.
“I am deeply appreciative that they believe in me and my academic abilities,” she said. “Since receiving sponsorship from Harneys last summer to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference in China, I have built a strong and constructive relationship with this firm. Their commitment to my development as a future lawyer speaks to their commendable responsiveness. I am proud to be affiliated with this firm as they have made me feel well-supported and I look forward to seeing the heights that this relationship will be taken to.”
Marco said that Harneys had given Sydonie the opportunity to qualify with a law degree and postgraduate qualification, which in turn will allow her to undertake articles of clerkship. Completion of those articles mean that Sydonie will be able to qualify as an attorney in Cayman.
“Harneys is committed to investing in the local community, particularly when it comes to assisting star candidates, such as Sydonie, in achieving their goal of a qualification in law,” he said.
