The award of the British Empire Medal to Mr. Leonard Augustus Hew was a highlight of this morning’s Queen’s Birthday Parade and awards ceremony.
Mr. Hew was recognised at the steps of the Legislative Assembly today (Saturday, 13 June) for his service to the development of sport and to the Cayman Islands community in general. His sponsors were the Hon. D. Kurt Tibbetts, OBE, JP and Mr. Seth Thomas Bodden, MBE, JP.
Following this, Governor Helen Kilpatrick, CB, also presented six distinguished young people with Gold Awards earned in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. They reached this level after progressing through the youth programme, which focusses upon community service, skills development, physical recreation and expedition adventures.
Other highlights of the Queen’s Birthday programme were the traditional 21-gun salute in honour of the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the Royal Cayman Islands Police’s Marching Band and Guard of Honour leading a parade of uniformed services organisations – from Scouts and Cadets to the Fire and Prison Services, as well as veterans of war.
The ceremony was attended by Premier Alden McLaughlin, MBE, JP and other senior leaders of government, and their spouses; and by relatives and friends of the awardees.
The parade was followed by the traditional Garden Party at the grounds of Government House on Seven Mile Beach.
