Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) welcomes new Caymanian ICU physician

Dr Carl Brown recently returned home to join the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA), specialising in anaesthesia and intensive care after attending medical school at the University of the West Indies.

Starting at a young age, Dr Brown has had a love for the medical field gaining high school work experience at the HSA in the forensics lab and operating theatre. During his first five years of medical school Dr Brown returned to Cayman during summer vacations to get more hands on experience and learn additional skills.

“On completion of the medical programme, I began a year of internship where I worked as a junior doctor in surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology followed by a year as senior house officer in the department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of the West Indies,” Dr Brown said. “It was there where I fell in love with this specialty and subsequently applied to the UWI DM Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Residency Programme.”

“I then returned home to Cayman for six months where I apprenticed under Dr. John Lee, HSA Pain Specialist,” Dr Brown said. “My relationship with the HSA has grown over the past ten years and I’m honoured to be back caring for my people and reconnecting with the HSA family. It gives me great pride to be working in such a friendly, innovative and progressive institution. I am also looking forward to playing an active role in the further development of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and the development of the country’s health service as a whole.”

Dr Brown joins a team of 75 fulltime physicians currently employed at the HSA with 61% being Caymanian, a 25% increase in Caymanian doctors over the previous five years.

Dr Delroy Jefferson, HSA Medical Director, said he is grateful to have Dr Brown return home to join the HSA team. “We have worked very hard to become an accredited hospital to train interns and to groom these individuals to come back to Cayman after completing their specialised training overseas,” Dr Jefferson said. “It is a major objective to recruit and train qualified Caymanian physicians to fill vacant posts at the HSA and we welcome Dr Brown to our team.”
