Cayman Islands’ Intertrust exhibits Savannah Primary students’ art
On Tuesday evening, 2 June, Savannah Primary students, their families and teachers joined Intertrust staff in the company’s building for an exhibit of student art. Guests were delighted by the vibrant mixed-media pieces which were proudly shown off by participating students.
The students, ranging in age from five to seven, worked collectively on each piece from week to week over two terms, under the direction of Savannah Primary teacher and coordinator of the ‘Art Attack’ art club Mary Callaghan.
Ms. Callaghan commented, “From the inception of this collaborative project with Intertrust my students have dedicated themselves to producing innovative and creative mixed-media art pieces. Using collage, paint, clay, food coloring, glue and modelling wire, students approached this project in an open-minded, reflective and inspired way. I am extremely proud of each student and the work they created. In addition, I am confident that this experience has contributed to accelerating them on their journey to becoming lifelong learners who recognize that there are multiple strategies and approaches to finding solutions to challenges and that creating art is not restricted to using crayons, markers or pencil crayons.”
Intertrust, who first partnered with Savannah Primary last year for a reading and numeracy program, became involved in the art club when their Green Task Force renamed the company’s boardrooms to those of local flora and fauna as part of an internal initiative to raise the profile of local and endemic species with their staff. Their volunteers were happy to assist the students to realize Ms. Callaghan’s vision for the work.
Intertrust’s Charlotte Cloete added, “Intertrust globally supports charitable initiatives involving children and education. What better way to encourage children to learn about the incredible local flora and fauna than through art. Our volunteers were impressed by the children’s efforts and we are very pleased with the final pieces.”
The artwork will remain with Intertrust, on display in the building’s boardrooms which are named for each piece; Periwinkle, Hibiscus, Orchid, Sea Grape, Silver Thatch, Cayman Parrot and Hawksbill.
