Cayman Islands Invitational Event preview
Days away from the fifth staging of the Cayman Invitational, organisers are expecting a sold out venue at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Saturday, 14 May when the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, and US Olympic champions Allyson Felix and Carmelita Jeter take to the track along with another 100-plus athletes from 22 countries.
Meet Director Cydonie Mothersill has also confirmed that Cayman’s Ronald Forbes will not be participating in the Invitational after suffering an injury that required a procedure to help mend the affected area. Forbes, who was expected to compete in the 110m hurdles, is now recovering in anticipation of representing the Cayman Islands in the Rio 2016 Olympics. Kemar Hyman (100m), Jamal Walton (400m), Tyrell Cuffy (200m) and Carl Morgan (long jump) will compete for Cayman.
Leading up to Saturday’s meet, both Bolt and Felix will spend some time with Cayman’s young athletes, sharing their life experiences and answering questions. Felix will meet with the CARIFTA athletes on Wednesday while Bolt will make a quick stop in Cayman Brac to greet students on his way to Grand Cayman on Thursday, and then spend some time on Friday with 300-plus inter-primary sports athletes from Grand Cayman’s public and private primary schools.
Schedule of Events
Parking for the Cayman Invitational opens at 2:30pm and gates open at 3pm. Activities at Truman Bodden get underway at 4:30pm and will feature youth and high school races including relay teams from popular Jamaica high schools Calabar and Kingston College. The opening ceremony takes place at 5:30pm and the first official race — the Women’s 400m Hurdles — will get underway at 6pm. Organisers are reminding attendees that there is a strict no-re-entry policy that will be enforced.
There are several much-anticipated matchups on the schedule including the Men’s 100m, 200m and 110m Hurdles and the Women’s 100m and 400m.

Bloomfield, Taylor, Walton for Cayman Invitational
From Track Alerts
Akeem Bloomfield, Christopher Taylor and Jamal Walton will headline the youth section of the Cayman Invitational meet on Saturday, May 14 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
In 2015, Jamaican Taylor ran 46.06 to beat Cayman Islands’ Jamal Walton, who was second in 46.30.
Since then, Taylor went on to win the World Youth Championship title in 2015 and the Under-18 400m at last month’s Carifta Games.
Walton took silver in the Under-20 Carifta Games 400m final behind another Jamaican Bloomfield.
Bloomfield will only run the 4x100m relay.
Carifta Games 200/400m double champion Sada Williams of Barbados is listed for the one lap event.
Williams is Barbados’ national record holder over 200m with 22.61, a time done in March. Her best time over the one lap event is 52.07, a national junior record.
Meanwhile, Suriname Youth Olympic Games triple jump champion Miguel Van Assen will also be on show.
Kingston College’s (KC) quartet of Shammawi Wellington, Shivnarine Smalling, Tyreke Bryan and Yashawn Hamilton are entered for the 4x100m, 100m and 200m events.
Calabar High’s Dejour Russel and Micheal Stephens will also be in the sprints.
