Man Arrested for Theft in Connection with Purchases with Stolen Credit Card Number
The Financial Crimes Unit received a complaint this week from a resident regarding the unauthorized use of his local credit card number to make thousands of dollars in purchases while he was off-island in recent weeks. The card number had been used to purchase gift certificates at local restaurants over the phone as well as to make other purchases online.
Yesterday, 5 May, personnel at one of the restaurants where gift certificates had been purchased using the credit card number informed police that a man was dining in the restaurant using one of these certificates. FCU detectives promptly responded and arrested the man, age 27, of George Town, at the restaurant on suspicion of Theft.
“Thanks to the keen observations of restaurant personnel we were able to make this arrest and prevent further offences from being carried out,” says Chief Inspector Richard Barrow, acting head of the FCU. “This case is a reminder to the public to guard its financial information closely — credit card holders should monitor their statements closely for any suspicious transactions on an ongoing basis.”
