Curator’s Corner
Gladwyn “Miss Lassie” Bush
Title: Window IV
Window IV is an acrylic painting on wood created by the late Caymanian artist, Gladwyn “Miss Lassie” Bush. The work was created by Bush in 1980 and is one of several window panels that originated from Bush’s home on South Sound road, Grand Cayman.
A fourth generation Caymanian, Bush began painting at the age of 62, after what she described as a ‘visionary experience.’ Bush referred to her paintings as her ‘markings’, which were executed in a naïve style that is reflective of an intuitive, self-taught, artist. Strong Christian themes run through Bush’s work and she painted on canvas, along with other surfaces like the walls, windows and furnishings of her home.
Window IV is unusual to other window panels that were collected from Bush’s home. Unlike other panels that commonly display characters and animals that reference biblical stories, this painting only displays images of plants and flowers that seem to be from a tropical region. Perhaps Bush was inspired from the scenery she witnessed outside her window and decide to combine the tropical beauty with in the same painting excerpts as her biblical illustrations.
Miss Lassie is considered a serious intuitive artist within the Caribbean region, along with the likes of Guyana’s Philip Moore and Jamaica’s Kapo. Bush’s window panels were purchased as a part gift of Michael and Alejandro Joseph. They were purchased in part via the Susan A. Olde Collection Fund for the National Gallery. The works are now on display in the National Gallery’s permanent collection display in the upper gallery.
