Cayman Islands police conduct operation in North Side
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) conducted an operation in North Side on Sunday (8) to address residents’ complaints regarding speeding by motorists and riders on illegal motorcycles, as well as drunk driving, during the popular Sunday drive to and from Rum Point. Officers also sought to address public nuisance issues and drug use.
The operation was a coordinated effort among various units of the RCIPS, including uniform officers, the K9, Operational Support and the Marine Units. No drug arrests were made and no persons were found to be in possession of any weapons. However, fourteen speeding tickets were issued and two persons were reported for prosecution for other traffic offenses. One North Side man was also arrested on a Court warrant during the operation.
Chief Inspector Brad Ebanks, Area Commander for the Eastern Districts, said, “We’ve conducted a number of covert operations in the Rum Point area in the past, during which people were arrested for the possession of drugs. However, this operation was more visible as its objective was to address road safety and other concerns raised by residents, and it is important that the public sees us out there.”
Other issues being addressed by police in the Rum Point area include double parking along Sand Point Road that restricts residents’ access to their homes, and loud music and drug use on boats. Operations such as the one conducted on Sunday will continue to be carried out a regular intervals.
