Cayman Islands police FCU warns of fraudulent solicitations via WhatsApp
From RCIPS Jan 21 2019
The RCIPS Financial Crime Unit has received reports of an attempted scam being conducted via WhatsApp, where persons have received messages from an account impersonating Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin.
The account claims to be negotiating an investment deal with the IMF and asks the victim to send the RMB equivalent of US $45,000 to a Chinese lobbyist firm. A screenshot of one such message can be viewed at the link above.
The RCIPS FCU is reminding the public not to communicate with anyone that they suspect may be scammers, and to be wary of any solicitations for financial details or donations made via WhatsApp or any other social media. If any member of the public receives such solicitations they are asked to contact the RCIPS Financial Crime Unit by emailing [email protected].
