With a crackdown on international financial havens being led by the United States and the European Union, the Cayman Islands have increasingly come under the microscope as efforts mount to catch those seeking to evade taxes.

The Premier of the Cayman Islands, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, recently appeared on the BBC facing tough questions to do with the Cayman Islands’ status as an International Financial Centre (IFC).

With a crackdown on international financial havens being led by the United States and the European Union, the Cayman Islands have increasingly come under the microscope as efforts mount to catch those seeking to evade taxes.

The BBC interview was conducted by Stephen Sackur, host of BBC World’s flagship HARDtalk programme. Sackur is regarded as one of Britain’s toughest interviewers, and he grilled Premier McLaughlin on a range of issues surrounding the Cayman Islands as a tax haven with over one trillion US dollars in assets being held there by financial institutions, companies and individuals.

Speaking to Cayman 27’s Tammi Sulliman on his return to the Cayman islands, Premier McLaughlin stated that the toughest part of the interview was; “trying to explain quickly what it is Cayman does and how it adds value to the whole business of international finance. That is not an easy thing to explain in a sound bite.”

He also spoke to Sulliman about his nervousness at the eventual reception to his BBC HARDtalk interview.
