PFL/GPFL Playoffs: Finals and Third-Place Review

The heavy rains that drenched the Annex Field this past Saturday could not dampen the enthusiasm and excitement that is the 2015/2016 CUC Primary Football League (PFL) and Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL) finals and third-place games.

Cayman Prep and Red Bay Primary repeated as Under 9 and Under 11 League champions respectively and Cayman International School were crowned Girls’ League champions.

PFL Under 9 Consolation Cup Final:

Triple C captured the Under Consolation Cup with an impressive 3-0 victory over George Town Primary thanks to goals from Kane Watson, Jayven Bonner and top scorer for the Crusaders, Justin Parsons.

PFL Under 9 Champions Cup Final:

Cayman Prep recorded their third consecutive Under 9 League title after a very entertaining and hard-fought 4-3 penalty shootout win over St. Ignatius Prep.

Cayman Prep’s Yakub Neverill opened the scoring in the first half as the rains began to fall at the Annex Field. Devanti McInerney blasted in the equaliser midway through the second half and the score would remain the same through extra time as neither school could find a winner.

Cayman Prep’s goalkeeper Payton Corbin would be the hero on the day as he saved the first penalty he faced in the penalty shootout. Cayman Prep scored its three penalties and secured the Under 9

League title. For his performance during the game and his key penalty save, young Corbin was awarded the Gerome Graham Memorial Most Valuable Player Award for the finals.

PFL Under 9 Champions Cup Third-Place:

Cayman International School grabbed third place in the Under 9 League with a 2-0 victory over

Savannah Primary thanks to goals from Chad Murphy and Jackson MacKay.

PFL Under 11 Consolation Cup:

NorthEast Schools won their first major title as they defeated Triple C 5-4 to capture the Under 11

Consolation Cup following a dramatic sudden death penalty shootout.

Both schools played some exciting football and created several chances but neither could find that elusive goal during regulation time or extra time. Each school scored their three regular penalties but Triple C missed on their second sudden death penalty to concede the title.

PFL Under 11 Champions Cup:

For the second year running, an undefeated Red Bay Primary and undefeated Cayman Prep met in the final for the Under 11 League championship. With the day’s rains subsiding, both schools took to the field with a point to prove after their regular season match-up in November ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

Cayman Prep began the game as they always do with some neat, quick passing but Red Bay’s defence were content to soak up the pressure and neutralise any Cayman Prep attacks. Red Bay’s counter-attacking style paid off in the sixth minute as Jaquan Wray raced on to a through ball before calmly placing his shot into the far corner of the Cayman Prep net.

Red Bay’s bench erupted and young Wray was mobbed by his team mates. A little shaken, Cayman Prep remained with their game plan and created several chances stinging the fingertips of Red Bay’s goal keeper Andres Kirchman on several occasions.

Not to be outdone, Red Bay’s goal scorer and his strike partner Alejandro Holness were causing a little trouble for the Cayman Prep rearguard.

As the minutes ticked away, Alejandro Holness ensured that his school would be holding on to the coveted title as he blasted in Red Bay’s second from the penalty spot in the 59th minute to end the game at 2-0.

Young Andres Kirchman would be the hero of the day as it was his brave goalkeeping and key saves that would be the difference between the two proud schools. For his efforts between the posts, the Red Bay shot-stopper was awarded the Justin Henry Memorial Most Valuable Player Award for the final.

PFL Under 11 Champions Cup Third-Place:

Truth For Youth won the Under 11 League third-place with a narrow 1-0 victory over Savannah

Primary. Keon Jennings netted the winner for his school.

GPFL Consolation Cup:

George Town Primary captured its first Girls’ title as they beat Sir John A. Cumber Primary ‘B’ 1-0 to lift the Girls’ Consolation Cup. Ja’Shante Pearson was the George Town heroine as she claimed the game’s only goal.

GPFL Champions Cup:

Cayman International School lifted the Girls’ League championship after a very wet but exciting final against defending champions Sir John A. Cumber Primary. Both schools came into the final undefeated after drawing 2-2 in their regular season encounter.

Cayman International’s Riley Doyle grabbed the only goal of the game late in the first half as she ‘squeezed’ home the ball through a mass of bodies and the puddles of water that had formed on the field following the frequent downpours that fell throughout the game.

Cayman International’s Alexia Bromfield was presented with the Marie Martin Award as the Most Valuable Player in the final for her determined play and non-stop running throughout the game.

At the trophy presentation following the Under 11 League final, organisers thanked the young officials Matthew Bodden, Francisco Murillo, Jared Wright, Matthew Rich, D’Andre Rowe and Jordan McLean for their assistance throughout the day.

A special vote of thanks was passed on to Dwayne Ebanks and Chastine Rankine for their assistance with ‘grooming’ the young officials throughout the season.
