Around 12:15AM this morning, 16 August, police responded to a call from prison officers at HMP Northward regarding their capture of a man suspected to have been throwing items over the fence. The man was found with a quantity of a substance suspected to be ganja, wrapped in small, plastic bags. Police officers arrested the man, age 22, of West Bay, on suspicion of Criminal Trespass, Possession of Ganja with Intent, and Possession of an Offensive Weapon.
Several minutes later police officers located a vehicle that had been seen by prison officers near the prison when the incident occurred. Having cause to suspect drug activity, officers searched the vehicle and trace amounts of a substance suspected to be ganja were recovered. Two women in the vehicle, ages 23 and 22, both of George Town, were arrested on suspicion of Conspiracy to Commit an Offence.
All three are in Police Custody.
“Thanks to the good coordination between prison officers and police, and the quick actions of police, we effectively responded to this incident and now three people are in custody,” said Daniel Greaves, Deputy Director of HMP Northward. “All attempts to smuggle contraband into this prison will not be tolerated and will be met with the same response.”
