Cayman Islands raises the Flag for the Commonwealth

• Cayman observes Commonwealth Day by participating in “Fly a Flag” initiative
• Government officials attended the brief ceremony

GRAND CAYMAN (GIS) – The Cayman Islands observed Commonwealth Day (12 March) by raising the Commonwealth Flag outside the Government Administration Building during a brief ceremony at 10 a.m.

The event was part of the ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’ initiative. The raising of the flag is an act of witness around the globe where members of a family of nations under the Commonwealth reaffirm the commitment of to democracy, development, and respect for diversity, according to a Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth press release. This year’s special theme is “Towards a Common Future”, which explores how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizen.

The ceremony began with remarks from Cabinet Secretary, Samuel Rose. Lemuel Hurlstone, the Honourary Representative of the Royal Commonwealth Society read the message from the Commonwealth Secretary-General, while the Cayman Girl Guides read the Commonwealth Affirmation. The ceremony concluded with His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Franz Manderson raising the Commonwealth flag.

The Premier, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, Cabinet Ministers, MLA’s and other government officials also attended the ceremony.
