Last week, the RCIPS and FedEx assisted a local taxi operator in reuniting a visitor with her lost handbag.

Taxi operator Romellia Welcome first approached the RCIPS after she realized that the handbag which had been left in her taxi did not belong to one of her relatives. It was property of a cruise ship passenger from the US who had recently taken Ms. Welcome’s taxi. When Ms. Welcome was unable to get in contact with the visitor on her own she decided to see if the police could help.

After speaking with Ms. Welcome, Inspector Courtney Myles of the Community Policing Department, did some quick research and was able to contact the visitor’s bank in the US, which informed him that she had just cancelled her credit cards the day before. The bank, in turn, put him in touch with the woman, and he was able to let her know that the bag, which contained both her and her husband’s credit cards and passports, had been found.

From there, arrangements had to be made to get the bag sent back to the US, and when Inspector Myles contacted FedEx, they even offered to ship the bag back to its owner free of charge.

“When Ms. Welcome approached me, I was more than happy to help,” said Inspector Myles. “I commend her for her persistence in doing the right thing, and we are both grateful to FedEx for their generosity and support in shipping the bag free of charge. While it seems like just a minor incident, this is a small example of what can happen when we work together with members of the public and local organizations.”

On Tuesday, 1 May, Ms. Welcome and Inspector Myles took the bag to the FedEx in Industrial Park where it was packaged for shipping back to its owner.
