Cayman Islands roadside cleanup

IMG_0689webThe Youth Ministry of Savannah United Church participated in the Chamber of Commerce roadside cleanup on Saturday as one of their community mission events, in preparation for an upcoming mission trip to Cuba this summer.

Although Earth Day was officially Wednesday 22 April, approximately 1500 people across the island turned out on Saturday for the Chamber of Commerce roadside cleanup of our islands. The Chamber provided T-shirts, gloves and garbage bags to all who had registered in advance.

It was very hot, hard work for all the companies, individuals, and organisations involved, but each person should feel proud of doing his/her part in removing a lot of garbage (much of which is recyclable) and litter from our roadways.

What was disheartening, however, was seeing the cleaned areas strewn with paper cups, water bottles and other trash the very next day. We hope that there will be soon be signage and enforcement in place to prevent people from littering. Rather than tossing your garbage out the car window or dropping bottles or food wrappers as you enjoy a walk, take it home and put it in the proper receptacle for pickup by the Department of Environment.

Please keep Cayman clean.
