Cayman Islands ruggers humiliate Guyana 58-14
From Newsroom GY
Guyana’s senior men’s Rugby 15s team departed full of confidence that they will topple Cayman Islands in the qualifier to the Americas Rugby Challenge Series, but they got a rude awakening as they were dismissed 14-58.
According to the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Facebook page: “Both teams played a dynamic, open-field running game that thrilled the 500 spectators at South Sound Rugby Club, but the consistent pressure by Cayman Islands turned to field position and often points, resulting in a clear victory for the hosts.”
Cayman Islands ruggers take Guyana’s place in the Americas Rugby Championships to meet the likes of Colombia, Paraguay and Mexico.
Cayman Islands, ranked 52, are six places ahead of Guyana on the rankings. Heading into the clash, Peter Green, President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, expressed concern over the small size of the field, but expressed confidence Guyana could still come out on top.
It is understood, a standard field is 70m x 100m with the in-goal line being 10m-22m, but in the Cayman it is 61m x 91m with an in-goal of 5m.
Guyana will now have to return to the Caribbean RAN Series and battle their way to the top to get another chance at qualifying for the Americas Championship.

Cayman rout Guyana to qualify for Americas Rugby Challenge
From Americas Rugby News
The Cayman Islands will make be the fourth team at the Americas Rugby Challenge later this year as they recorded a one-sided 58-14 win over Guyana in George Town on Saturday afternoon. Picture-perfect conditions set the stage for a spectacle of attacking rugby as the fans were treated to a nine-try performance from their home side.
David Stringer was a key figure for the Caymans throughout, and the scrumhalf was the first to cross the line for an early try. After a brief stalemate the second score came from Mikey Wilson who had the pace to make the corner after a huge miss-out pass from Morgan Hayward.
Two long-range efforts came before halftime. The first was from captain Killian Everard who raced clear around the outside. Hayward added the extras and sent over a penalty goal and there was still time for one last score before the break.
It was flanker Paul Westin who did the honors, breaking clear from halfway and showing his pace to make the line. That made it four tries to none for the home side and with the score 29-0, the door looked all but shut for Guyana.
There would be three more tries before the Green Machine would find the scoreboard. A penalty try from a scrum, largely thanks to heavyweight tighthead prop Peter de Vere, and then well-worked scores from midfielder Justin Wight and a second for Westin put the result beyond any doubt.
To their credit Guyana would fight for two of their own before the end. Lively inside center Godfrey Broomes had been carded earlier after repeat team infringements and he made up for it finishing off a line break by standout second row Vallon Adams. A second try would come from outside center Ronald Mayers on an offload from Richard Staglon.
Two more tries came to the Caymans through Barry John Goude and Shane Westin. The final score read 58-14 with the Caymans leaving no doubt who should join Colombia, Mexico, and Paraguay in the 2019 edition of the second-tier Americas tournament.
