Cayman Islands’ utility company hosts annual contractors workshop
Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd (“CUC”) recently held another successful contractors’ workshop.
Over one hundred people attended the annual event which created the opportunity for various companies to get updates on the best safety practices and on how to follow guidelines when working near CUC equipment and around electricity.
Now in its fifth year, the workshop attracted twenty local companies including members from the RCIPS, FLOW, Water Authority Cayman, and National Roads Authority. Many businesses got the chance to speak with vendors from North America as well as local vendors who were on hand to showcase their products and services and to update contractors on the safest available protective clothing.
Manager of CUC’s Environment, Health & Safety department, Mrs. Joni Kirkconnell, pointed out that, “The main message behind the contractors’ workshop is to get as many people as possible aware of the hazards that are associated with working near or within proximity of electrical components. The more people that know about the dangers, the less likely it is of having an incident. So it’s really not just to keep our employees safe and our assets protected, but also to look out for our brothers and sisters that are working in the industry.” said Mrs. Kirkconnell.
Mr. Patrick Bush, CUC’s Health and Safety Specialist touched on some of the topics discussed at the workshop. “One of the topics was the use of rumble strips for traffic control because we had a recent near miss where a couple of our employees were subject to potentially serious injury by a vehicle running through our work zone. So we were pursuing some traffic control devices that would help us make a better safer environment for our employees. We thought this was important to share with the rest of the employers on island to help them control their work zones so it can be safer for their employees,” said Mr. Bush.
The annual workshop is aimed at ensuring that local contractors are kept up to date on the latest safety measures which CUC has put in place to protect its employees and the public and to encourage their feedback on best practices around safety.
