Cayman Islands: Weekend of traffic arrests highlights irresponsible behaviour on Cayman’s Roads, 20 November

From RCIPS

This past weekend, 17-20 November, police made multiple road arrests during proactive enforcement activities and also during police response to motor vehicle collisions. Altogether, there were six arrests on suspicion of DUI, two arrests for driving while disqualified, one for dangerous driving, one for leaving the scene of an accident, and another for possession of ganja. Some of these incidents are highlighted below.

Just before 11:30PM last Friday, 17 November, officers carrying out radar checks on West Bay Road caused a vehicle to stop in the vicinity of Governor’s Square after the vehicle was caught travelling at twice the speed limit. Officers informed the driver of his dangerous driving, at which time it was discovered that he was driving with an expired driver’s license, expired certificate of road worthiness and expired registration. The driver, a 63-year-old man from George Town, also failed a breath test and was arrested for DUI, dangerous driving, and other traffic offences. He is now on Police bail.

On Saturday afternoon, 18 November, just before 2:30PM, officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of the cricket pitch on Crewe Road. An orange Honda Element travelling west and Honda Civic traveling east had collided head-on, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, though no serious injuries were reported. The driver of the Honda Civic, age 22 of George Town, was arrested for driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and possession of ganja, after a quantity of ganja was recovered during a search of his person. He is currently on Police bail.

Just before 3:30AM on Sunday, 19 November, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision on South Church Street near Boilers Road involving a white Nissan Fuga and a blue Hyundai Accent. The collision occurred when the Hyundai pulled out onto South Church Street from Boilers Road, and the Hyundai sustained major front-end damage. The driver of the Hyundai, age 31 of George Town, was breathalyzed and found to have a blood alcohol level over twice the legal limit. She was arrested for DUI and is now on Police bail.

Officers on patrol later that same morning, Sunday, 19 November, around 10AM, came across a silver Honda Accord with heavily tinted windows which they caused to stop on Shedden Road near the junction of Mary Street. The driver of the vehicle, age 25 of George Town, was driving with an expired license and arrested. He is now on Police bail.

Around 2:30AM this morning, 20 November, officers on patrol encountered a blue Mazda Demio stationary in the eastbound lane of Shedden Road in the vicinity of Martin Road. The driver appeared to be asleep, and when awoken by officers could not produce his driver’s license. Officers had cause to suspect he had been drinking, but the man, age 40 of George Town, refused a breath test and was arrested for refusing to provide a specimen. He is now on Police bail.

“I believe we are lucky that no one lost their life on the road this weekend, because we have been seeing some very irresponsible behavior and dangerous driving,” said Inspector Ian Yearwood, Head of the Traffic Management Unit. “We are out conducting regular patrols and doing radar checks, because drunk driving is a menace to all of us. Remember, if you are caught driving drunk you will lose your license for a minimum of one year. Don’t risk it. Be responsible.”
