Cayman Islands women’s prison launches new rehab course & receives updates
During the free 22-week course qualified MAC makeup artists will teach inmates the basic techniques and skills needed when professionally applying various cosmetic products.
Prison Director Neil Lavis said the training course will not only provide a pathway for professional training for interested inmates, but also opportunities for future career development.
“Our hope is that this course will inspire the inmates and give them the support they need to one day secure a job in the cosmetology field after they are released,” he added.
Since opening its doors, the beauty clinic has provided a variety ofsalon services including manicures, pedicures, waxing, haircuts, hair colouring and braiding.
“If an inmate aspires to become a professional makeup artist, then this course will provide them with the knowledge and motivation they will need to make their career dreams come true,” Deputy Director of Rehabilitation Aduke Joseph Caesar explained. “If an inmate doesn’t want to be a professional, but wants to learn how to apply the products properly, then this course will give them the hands-on experience they need.”
In addition to practicing styles on each other, the women also offer salon services to members of the public.
As courses like this are being implemented, HMP Fairbanks has also recently received upgrades to the interior and exterior of the facility.
“Through generous donations we were able to stock the prison’s library with various reading materials from law books to novels and supply the inmates with exercise equipment to occupy their time and encourage a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Lavis stated.
The exterior of the building also received a face-lift with a new sign, covered walkway, landscaping and a visitor’s reception area.
