Cayman Islands workshops to explore emerging trends at Healthcare Conference
Attendees at this year’s Cayman Islands Healthcare Conference, taking place from 29th to 31st October at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, will not only enjoy presentations from some of the world’s top healthcare professionals, they will also be able to participate in one of three interactive workshops on the topics of Mental Health, Non-Medical Therapies and End Of Life Decisions.
Now in its sixth year, the 2015 Healthcare Conference theme is: ‘Embracing Emerging Trends’, with a strong focus on allied health, alternative therapies, mental health, cancer, cardiovascular care, end of life decisions, palliative care and planning healthy communities. With those topics in mind, organisers are excited to present three workshops to run concurrently, taking place on the afternoon of Friday 30th October.
“Mental Health – Let’s talk about it”, sponsored by KPMG, will take a look at mental health from a variety of perspectives. Panelists include The Wellness Centre’s Shannon Seymour and Chairman of the Mental Health Commission, Dr Marc Lockhart, as well as Annikki Brown of Generali Worldwide who will provide insight into insurance coverage for mental health treatment. The education component will also be explored with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education participating in discussion surrounding whether mental health should be considered a social, education or health issue.
“Beyond Medicine: Taking a look at non-medical therapies”, sponsored by Jackson International, will provide a forum for discussion on why non-medical therapies should be used, how effective they are and who should be responsible for paying. This workshop will cover non-medical therapies such as acupuncture, music therapy and talk therapy. Amongst the speakers on this panel is Dr Adrian Legaspi, Medical Director, Advanced Surgical Oncology Network, Tenet Florida International, who is well versed in nonmedical therapies and is excited be a part of this discussion:
“I look forward to bringing a true clinical perspective to the topic while supporting and objectively speaking on the subject” said Dr Legaspi.
“End of Life Decisions – Some of the most important things to consider”, sponsored by Unified Technologies, will discuss the difficult decisions that need to be made around DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). This workshop will include panelists that are experts in palliative care, law and ethics, including Dr Virginia Hobday, Medical Director of Cayman HospiceCare and Mr Graham Tully who will be representing the Ethics Committee, among others.
These workshops will offer the community an important platform where both delegates and stakeholders can successfully exchange ideas and apprise themselves of the latest efforts and emerging trends in these three important areas.
