Cayman Islands youngsters’ creativity on show at The Ritz Carlton
An impressive array of artwork is currently on display at The Gallery at The Ritz-Carlton, courtesy of the talents of some of Cayman’s finest young artists. Painted by year six students who take part in the Heritage Arts programme at Government schools across the island, the art show is brimming with original design, creative thought and skillful application.
The students have been learning a variety of skills as part of the programme, implemented into the year six curriculum by Cayman Traditional Arts, run by CTA Director Chris Christian. The programme features a whole host of activities for youngsters to help them appreciate Cayman’s vibrant heritage and culture, bringing these activities to life for the young students to ensure that they are not forgotten. The art classes are a particular draw for the students, with the art exhibition at The Gallery at The Ritz-Carlton a prestigious showcase for all their hard work.
At the opening night of the exhibition, Shae Ebanks, who attends East End Primary, described the artistic process:
“Mr Chris brought in some pictures for us to look at and we decided as a class what we would like to paint. We used a mixture of sand and acrylic to produce our artwork,” she advised.
Allyson Edwards attends Red Bay Primary. She and her brother, Alexander, created a beautiful bird from acrylic paint.
“I personally like birds, so we thought this bird, which is a nightingale, was a nice bird to paint,” she confirmed.
Sir John A Cumber Primary School students described their artwork, which included an element of pointillism within its design, explaining how each of the students concentrated on separate aspects of the artwork to create the overall piece.
The year six class teachers agreed that the art classes in particular were a brilliant way in which to relax students and to calm them down, confirming that artwork instilled a great sense of quiet and peace among the students.
“Every year we are always impressed by the enthusiasm and energy we receive from the students as they take part in our Heritage Arts programme,” Mr Christian commented. “This year we are particularly delighted by the results, which show the students demonstrating a great amount of skill and care in their artwork. This aspect of the programme helps the students focus on local subject matter while honing their artistic skills simultaneously. They have all embraced their artistic tasks and produced some excellent pieces.”
Artwork is on show until 15 August by students from the Lighthouse School, Red Bay Primary, Bodden Town Primary, Prospect Primary, East End Primary, Edna M. Moyle (North Side) Primary, George Town Primary and Sir John A Cumber Primary.
