George Town, Cayman Islands, March 09, 2020 – CIBC FirstCaribbean partnered with University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) to provide a one-day job shadowing experience to a female student recently in celebration of International Women’s Day.

At the bank’s Cayman Islands headquarters, 18-year old accounting student Maria Lewis got the opportunity to witness a wide range of job skills, ask questions, pick up information, tour the facilities and learn first-hand the responsibilities and rewards of employment with CIBC FirstCaribbean.

“The CIBC FirstCaribbean International Women’s Day Job Shadowing Event was an educational experience for me. I witnessed diligent and hardworking women in their chosen careers. During the event, I learnt about the various banking options available; more specifically, corporate banking and retail banking. In addition, I learnt about other departments in the bank such as operations, credit risk management, and finance,” said Ms. Lewis.

“Finance stood out to me the most because I am passionate about a career in accounting. This experience has shown me that there are several career paths to explore in banking,” she added.

“Through our Work-Based Learning Programme, experiences like these support some of the programme’s primary functions by exposing our students to areas of interest, with students being guided by experts in those fields. Additionally, they offer networking and mentorship opportunities, which all work together to enrich students’ training and preparation for the world of work,” said Joydel Trail, Programme Leader for Work-Based Learning, Office of Student Life, University College of the Cayman Islands “We are appreciative of businesses and employers who continually afford these experiences to our students,” she added.

Head of Human Resources for Cayman & BVI Sherrill J. Beckford stated, “At CIBC FirstCaribbean, we recognise that job shadowing is a beneficial activity that allows persons to explore careers they are interested in by spending time with professionals working in those fields. The exercise provides more insight than just reading a job description or asking an employee to describe what they do.”

“Job shadowing provides an opportunity to gain understanding on the organization’s structure and culture. Students are able to make professional contacts and expand their network” she added.
