Cayman LOC preparing for CONCACAF Women’s U20 Championship
CONCACAF.com GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (Nov. 20, 2013) – The 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) is already preparing its resources for the biennial competition, which will be played January 9-19 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
The Cayman Islands LOC team is comprised of volunteers, who are responsible for all logistical matters related to the event.
“We are ready for anything,” LOC Chairwoman Martha Godet told CONCACAF.com.
Hosting the well-received CONCACAF Under-15 Championship in August has given local leadership confidence that it can deliver on one of the confederation’s showpiece events.
The prevailing view is that hosting just eight teams, rather than the 22 that took part in the under-15s, puts the LOC in prime position to deliver world-class service to each of the visiting delegations.
“Because of the success of the U15 tournament we know what to expect and we are in the right frame of mind,” Godet noted.
The Truman Bodden Sports Complex seats approximately 3,500 spectators and Godet is certain that the Cayman Islands’ football-loving public will turn out to support the region’s best under-20 sides.
On November 5, a draw at the Westin Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman split the eight teams into two groups of four. In Group A, the defending champion United States was pitted against Guatemala, Jamaica and Costa Rica. Group B consists of the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico.
The top two teams advance to the semifinals, with the two finalists and the winner of the match for third place advancing to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
