Cayman: Longest serving member of Rotary honoured
At the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman this past Thursday, Chris Johnson was honored with a Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, award by past president Malcolm Eden, for his contributions as a Rotary treasurer spanning the past twelve years. Chris is the longest serving Member of the club having joined in 1979. His dedication to the club is an example to all and has encompassed acting as the President in 1985/6, the club secretary, the club sergeant and the district club secretary.
When contacted Chris said his life would not have been the same had he not been a Rotarian. He loves the way Rotary gives back to the community but at the same time he enjoys the fellowship of its members. Rotary he said is a powerful institution that continually supports both local charitable organizations and international organizations. When hurricanes devastate our neighbours he said, Rotary in Cayman is always at the forefront to help our friends.
He is proud to have assisted fellow members going back many years which included such stalwarts as David Foster, Sonnyboy Bodden, Harry McCoy and Bill McTaggart to name but a few. More recently he assisted Derek Haines, an extraordinary individual who almost single handedly raised over $3m for Rotary.
Always with a sense of humour and albeit slightly eccentric, he closed out by saying Carpe Diem. Whilst not being a Latin scholar I think I got the drift.
