GRAND CAYMAN (GIS) – The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is putting the final touches to a pared down Child Month, to maintain social distancing due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This year’s theme is “Our Children: Today’s Creation, Tomorrow’s Masterpiece.”

The annual May observance, which normally boasts more than two dozen events throughout the month, will now only host and partner eight events, due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 situation. These events will start with the Child Month Opening Church Service at Agape Family Worship Centre on Sunday, 17 May 2020, 11am. Prospect Primary School and John A. Cumber Primary School also are marking the celebration with events for students and parents.

“Child Month activities are starting much later than usual. We have had to revise our plans in light of the circumstances and due to the department’s increased workload during these challenging times,” said DCFS Acting Director Rayle Roberts.

“Despite the challenges we continue to be committed to supporting our children and their families and we still want to recognise their value.”

Mr. Roberts added that having to maintain social distancing and comply with current shelter-in-place provisions means that all Child Month events will be held remotely.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has meant that we’ve had to be creative in planning our events,” said the department’s Child Month Co-ordinator Vanda Powery.

“In trying out new things, we are pleased to be partnering with the National Drug Council in organising a TikTok Contest. We also are partnering with the Department of Counselling Services’ Family Resource Centre in celebrating International Day of Families.”

“To celebrate Child Month, we are using social media and WhatsApp to put on and source material from the public for events, such as for our Family Stay-at-Home Scavenger Hunt and our Talent Expo. We will also be recording Teen Panel using the Zoom meetings app, which will also be a first,” she concluded.
