Cayman Ministry of Health Issues Health Advice Ahead of the Holidays
Grand Cayman, Wednesday, 11 December2024 – The Ministry of Health is reminding the community of the simple steps they can take to reduce the spread of seasonal gastrointestinal illnesses – also known as stomach bugs, which often increase during the cooler months. These illnesses, typically caused by viruses like norovirus, can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. While common, these illnesses are highly preventable with proper hygiene and food safety practices.
Dr. Nick Gent, Chief Medical Officer for the Ministry of Health, highlighted the importance of prevention, stating, “Gastrointestinal illnesses are highly contagious but preventable with proper hygiene. Our goal is to empower the community with knowledge and tools to stay healthy this season.”
Practice good hygiene habits
To prevent these illnesses, the Ministry of Health encourages frequent handwashing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds or using hand sanitiser when convenient – particularly after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing or consuming food. Surfaces that are frequently touched, such as countertops, doorknobs, and light switches, should be cleaned and disinfected regularly using an appropriate disinfectant.
Proper food handling is also essential. Fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly before eating, shellfish and other high-risk foods should be cooked thoroughly, and individuals should avoid preparing food for others while feeling unwell.
Prevent the spread
It is also important to stay home when experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness to prevent spreading the virus to others.
Symptoms to watch for include:
§ Vomiting,
§ Diarrhea,
§ Stomach pain, and
§ Fever.
Individuals experiencing these symptoms should prioritise staying hydrated to avoid dehydration. Those with severe or prolonged symptoms, especially young children, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems, should seek medical care promptly.
The Ministry of Health remains committed to the health and safety of the community and encourages everyone to take steps to reduce the spread of gastrointestinal illnesses.
