Cayman: No Garbage Collection Tue Nov 5 in Preparation for Inclement Weather
Grand Cayman, November 4, 2024 – Due to the severe weather forecast, the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is advising members of the public of changes in the operation of the landfills and the delivery of garbage collection services.
There will not be garbage collection and all landfills will be closed on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The suspension of this service will affect the ordinary schedule potentially causing a delay of at least one day. Given the expected disruption of services, members of the public are asked to be patient whilst the DEH team continues to work hard and remain committed to resuming its regular services.
Additionally and with immediate effect, derelict vehicles, scrap metals, or used oil will not be accepted until further notice.
Residents are advised that normal collection and landfill operations are expected to resume on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, subject to further forecasts.
Effective preparedness is critical to limit any damage to homes in inclement weather. Residents are encouraged to follow the tips below.
· Cut back all trees and weak branches that make contact with buildings.
· Thin your foliage so the wind can flow freely through branches, decreasing the chance that trees/plants will be uprooted.
· Clean your yard of any items that could become missiles in a storm such as broken lawn furniture, etc.
· For any items that can’t be stored indoors, be sure they are tightly secured
· Tie down trash bin lids so they can’t blow open with strong winds.
· Arrange transportation of your vegetation and construction debris to the landfills, as well as any bulk waste.
Members of the public are also encouraged to use the 24-hour drop-off site at the entrance of the George Town landfill which will remain open to facilitate the disposal of small amounts of waste from residential customers, if necessary.
