Cayman: Pirates Week 2020 – THANK YOU!
WELL THAT WAS FUN! ROLL ON 2021!
DESPITE THE HURDLES OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND TROPICAL STORMS, THE PIRATES WEEK FESTIVAL WAS A SUCCESS!
Friday’s opening night kicked off with Happy Hour at The Hard Rock Cafe as well as a good old fashioned Pirate knees up at The Wharf, for the Official Pirate Welcome Party. After dancing the night away, we were back at it first thing in the morning for the Turtle Release with the Cayman Turtle Centre. Island Montessori School won the competition for the best turtle name and got to attend and assist with the release of the the turtles. For those unable to attend, the event was live streamed for all to see, courtesy of Cayman Compass. Despite inclement weather forecasted, that night saw absolute Pandemonium at Coral Beach with excellent live performance from some local bands and DJs.
On Saturday, the Pirate Crewes visited apprentice pirates at every district library and read stories from the high seas before the hunt was on to Find The Booty. With a top prize of $4000, over 40 teams entered this first year event. Lots of laughs were had and this event is sure to become a staple on the Pirates Week Festival calendar.
The Pirates, alongside Plastic Free Cayman, were up bright and early on Sunday morning to join the cleaning of South Sound beach plus many divers were hunting for treasure at the annual Underwater Treasure Hunt at Sunset House. The weekend was rounded out by the Pirate Flotilla led by the Pirate Party Boat from George Town Yacht Club across the sound to Rum Point. Based on the feedback, looks like this will also be another staple added to the festival lineup.
For the festival finale, the Pirates were up and on meal delivery service with Miss Cayman Islands Universe and Meals On Wheels volunteers. It’s fair to say there were some pleasantly surprised recipients when they opened their front doors!
Sigh – another year over…but, as seems to be the sentiment, roll on 2021!
