Cayman: Police Observe Relatively Safe Carnival Saturday

RCIPS officers were on duty this past Saturday, 29 June, during carnival festivities, helping to ensure a safe environment for all attendees, participants and spectators. Overall the events were well attended with the majority of attendees behaving well. However, officers responded to two incidents over the course of the day.

At about 7:30PM, officers on duty on West Bay Road observed a disturbance in the vicinity of Lime Tree Bay Avenue. The officers approached and found an altercation taking place between three women. Officers intervened and the three women were arrested for affray, with one of the women being further arrested for making threats to kill. They were then transported to the Cayman Islands Police Detention Centre, processed and subsequently bailed pending further investigation.

Shortly before 9:00PM, officers on duty at an event at the Seven Mile Public Beach observed an altercation between a security guard and another man. Officers intervened and spoke to the man, who became aggressive and refused to comply with officers’ instructions. An altercation ensued, during which the man struck one of the officers. Officers then attempted to arrest the man, who resisted, but was eventually detained and arrested.

The man, age 37 of Bodden Town, has since been charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Threats to Kill, and Assaulting a Police Officer in the Execution of Their Duty. He is expected to appear in court today, 2 July.

Police are also aware of another incident, which appears to have taken place earlier on Saturday, during the parade, and appears to be an altercation between three women, which has been circulated via social media. The RCIPS is looking into the incident, however there have been no related reports received at this moment.

“It is safe to say that the carnival festivities were a success, not just from a policing perspective, but for the Cayman Islands as well,” says Superintendent Roje Williams. “With this in mind, we would like to thank the majority of the public, who attended and participated in the events without incident, for staying safe and following the law.”
