Cayman: Police recover firearm, ammunition and drugs following early morning arrests in Savannah
Just after 7AM on Saturday, 12 March, police were dispatched by the 9-1-1 Communications Centre to Destiny Drive in Savannah, where it was reported that explosive sounds were heard in the area. After a brief search in the area, the officers from the Firearm Response Unit came across a number of vehicles and men who ran in nearby bushes. One of the men, in an attempt to drive away from the location, crashed his vehicle and made his escape on foot along Jayson Avenue, Savannah towards Shamrock Road. Officers subsequently located three men, who were detained as the officers investigated the report.
Officers carried out a further search of the area and the vehicles at the location, during which they recovered a firearm magazine containing several rounds of ammunition, as well as a loaded hand gun. Additionally, drugs along with drug paraphernalia were recovered during the searches.
The three men, ages 27 and 39 of George Town, and age 27 of Bodden Town, were arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm. A fourth man, age 22 of West Bay, was also and arrested at the location, on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ganja with intent to supply and possession of cocaine with intent supply.
Subsequently, a fifth man, age 35 of George Town, attended the Cayman Islands Detention Centre, where he was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of cocaine with intent to supply and possession of cocaine.
The K-9 Unit, Air Operations Unit and officers from the Uniform Branch also assisted with this incident.
Two of the men, a 27-year-old of Bodden Town and a 27-year-old of George Town, were bailed by police pending further investigations, while the other three were formally charged with the following offences:
The 38-year-old-man of George Town was formally charged with Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, Possession Drug Utensils and Possession of Criminal Property.
The 35-year-old-man of George Town was formally charged with Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Supply, Possession Criminal Property, and Dangerous Driving.
The 22-year-old-man of West Bay was formally charged with Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, Possession of Drug Utensils, Possession Criminal property and Possession of Ecstasy with Intent to supply.
The three men attended court today, 14 March and were all bailed by the court to return on 28 March.
