Cayman: Public Reminded of Use of Heroes Square

Heroes Square, George Town, Grand Cayman

The Cayman Islands Government’s Protocol Office is reminding the public of the significance and intended use of Heroes Square located in the heart of George Town.

The sacred space, opened in 2003 as part of the Quincentennial Celebrations, was designed to provide the community with a central area to honour Cayman Islands’ rich history and cultural icons. Heroes Square, positioned in front of the courthouse, features the busts honouring the national heroes and multiple statutes, each of which marks a significant chapter of Cayman’s collective history; in addition to the names of hundreds of men and women to whom the Islands will forever be indebted to for their service and sacrifice.

To preserve these important symbols of our heritage, members of the public are reminded to refrain from touching the busts and statues, as physical contact can cause wear and damage to the monuments, undermining the legacy they represent.

“Heroes Square is more than just a location; it is a sacred space that embodies our collective memory and national identity,” noted Jamaal Anderson, Acting Chief of Protocol. “It has been more than two decades since they were opened, and during that time this space has hosted scores of notable events such as Heroes Day which pay homage to our ancestors while celebrating the achievements of our citizens.”

Another important aspect of Heroes Square is the fountain, which serves as a beautiful centrepiece and a representation of the ideals and aspirations of our community.

“We urge visitors to avoid sitting on the fountain or throwing items into it. Such actions not only detract from the fountain’s aesthetic appeal but can also lead to maintenance issues,” said Anderson. “By keeping the fountain clean and accessible, we can ensure that it remains a cherished place for reflection and appreciation.”

Outside of these events, Heroes Square serves as a converging point for many citizens who gather to exercise their constitutionally protected right to peacefully assemble.

“Events such as these further highlights the significance and sanctity of these grounds which remain a crucial space for amicable discussions on topical matters. To ensure this remains the case for future generations, we are reminding the public of their obligation to respect this space,” said Anderson who noted that persons who wish to gather as part of a demonstration or assembly must first obtain permission from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

All events in Heroes Square must be arranged and approved in advance by filling out an application form on Protocol Office website

When visiting or carrying out an event at the location, members of the public are reminded that they must not use any forms of pyrotechnics, serve any kind of alcohol, charge for entry to an event or sell any items or conduct business of any kind.

“The public is welcomed to continue to visit Heroes Square to lay flowers at the busts and status while paying homage to our forefathers, and the courageous women who fought for suffrage and equal rights.”” said Anderson. “However, they are encouraged to honour the sanctity of Heroes Square and treat it with the highest degree of veneration of which it is befitting.”

For inquiries or to arrange an event at either location, please contact the Cayman Islands Government Protocol Office at [email protected] or visit www.gov.ky/protocolresources for further guidance.
